The National Centre for Early Music (NCEM)

The National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) in York is a premier venue dedicated to the promotion and performance of early music. Housed in the beautifully restored medieval church of St Margaret, Walmgate, this Grade I listed building blends historic charm with modern amenities. Originally built in the 11th century and extensively rebuilt over the centuries, the church was transformed into the NCEM in 2000, thanks to a National Lottery grant and support from various partners.

The NCEM is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, enhanced by a specially designed roof and adjustable baffles, making it an ideal setting for concerts, recordings, and events. The centre features a performance space that can accommodate up to 180 guests, offering an intimate yet inspiring atmosphere for a wide range of musical and educational activities.
